An enjoyable day at the weathering workshop 18th April

Well the workshop came and went and proved to be a very enjoyable and successful day. We had 15 modellers practicing many techniques from washes and dry brushing to creating realistic rust, scratch and chipped paint. (For those who were unable to attend this workshop another will be scheduled shortly). Feedback has been very positive with requests made for the following workshops:

Airbrush and advanced airbrush
Plastic kits and construction
Brass and white metal kits
Scrtach building rolling stock
Scratch building structures

Wheeltapper 2009 New Date

2009 Wheeltapper will now take place on the last Friday of February 2009. This was moved due to the wrong kind of snow.

Progress on 'O'kehampton

Progress continues on 'O'kehampton and is ahead of schedule. Work continues on the baseboards and tracklaying. Here's some photo's.

We are looking towards the station from the middle board of the front section. Yes its that big!, the other half of the front section is a mirror image, except for the trackwork.

As you can see our plan is to utilise the doors and the carpark in order to complete the project.

'O'kehampton - modelling Saturday 31st Jan

The next modelling Saturday on 31st Jan allows 'O'kehampton to make some progress. The track base for the 6 sidings at the engine shed end can be fixed to the baseboard frames. Tie bars can be fitted to Neil's and Adrian's points. Mick suggested that we should leave fitting the track till the next modelling day when the base will be ready and the double slip being built by James will be ready so that the track can be lined up accurately.

2010 Wheeltapper News

Tony Wright has kindly agreed to give us a talk and judge the 2010 Wheeltapper competition. To ensure this is a worthwhile journey we are looking forwards to a full compliment of models. Tony will have his camera with him so entries could end up in British Railway Modelling.

Wheeltapper 7mm Challenge 2010

7mm challenge- Build a 7mm “O gauge” british outline 5 plank open wagon or two. You choose the specific prototype but provide pictures of what you have modelled. Points will be awarded for construction, painting and weathering and closeness to the prototype. There are 2 sections to enable all abilities to have a go with the chance to win a prize which will be presented at Risex 2010
* Any method – open to all newcomers or non Wheeltapper winners. Select a kit or parts and build your wagon.
* Scratch built or kit conversion for non commercially available stock – open to all and Wheeltapper section winners and Wheeltapper trophy winners.

Join us through 2009 workshops covering construction, painting and weathering and many other aspects. See the workshop agenda for more details.

If possible create a story board of progress from start to finish to fit on an A4 Sheet. All entries to be displayed on a display board consisting track, ballast and suitable weathering.

'O'kehampton reaches milestone 1

'O'kehampton has completed milestone 1 which was to get the shed trackwork and main line in place on the first 4 boards by the end of 2008. With a modelling day on the 30th Dec, we just made it! All is wired and now tested thanks to Mick. Some track sections are still waiting other items such as the turntable to be completed further before they can be installed. Tim's double slip is functioning well, as are Adrian's points and plain track. Pete's O2 clips one of the double slip blades, but James' G6 doesn't - so is there something up with Pete's engine? Further investigation is required.

Milestone 2 is to get the rear siding trackwork in place on the same 4 boards. This will complete well over half the track as there is far less track at the military sidings end. The aim is to have this part done by the end of March. At the moment, Neil is doing the track for platform 3 and the goods shed, Adrian is building the 2 points that lead into the rearmost 3 lines, and Russ is making the sidings themselves.

Milestone 3 is to build and install the trackwork on the remaining scenic boards by the end of June. At this point we'll have the entire scenic area running and can start on painting and scenery.

Milestone 4 is to build the fiddle yard by the end of September.

2009 is the year of the model - well lets hope!

We are again planning a series of workshops throughout 2009. These are open to all and open to other local clubs for a small fee. We are also proposing clinics that are expert modellers will be available to offer advice and help, these will also be at our shows such as Railex and Risex.

'O'kehampton - First track laid

A major milestone has been achieved in the building of 'O'kehampton. The first track has been installed and wired. This is half of the visible main line on the engine shed side of the layout. The four components were build by James, Pete, Neil and Mick. The next area to install is the engine shed trackwork, consisting of a double slip built by Tim, and points and plain track built by Adrian. A definite team effort.

'O'kehampton rings the rails

'O'kehampton rises from the ground as the first boards are laid with track and operation commences with the first ringing of the rails and the sounds of a strange southern kettle on heat.
Is 'tea up' or is it the start of things to come.....bigger layouts, bigger shows, bigger clubs, bigger premise??

Camp 93 Parsons Lumber Company is based on prototype logging operations in Washington State North West America. The layout contains two main functions of hauling logs from the landings down steep slopes of 8% and more, whilst the not so sleepy yard caters for supplies and repairs. Entry to the yard is afforded by a deep ravine trestle. Operations are conducted by a mixture of geared locomotives including shay and climax to cope with the gradient and adverse cambers posed by track work that moulds the steep terrain. As a snapshot of real logging operations the layout is framed by large standing timber scaling up to 12 feet diameter and the mist of early morning sunshine on a rare sunny day. The bridge tender is not to be seen, maybe he is pre occupied by the latest delivery, check out the trestle cabin.
All aspects of the scene have been captured in detail and with most of the stock being modified ready to run with a decent paint and weathering finish the impression is set of run down dirty and slightly chaotic operations of the tall timbers.
Operation is DCC throughout with all engines sound enabled, is free standing and self contained with its own lighting.

WheelTapper 2009 Annual Club modelling competition.

February 6th

To be held at the Princess Risborough Community Centre from 7.30pm - 10pm. A guest speaker will also judge and make presentation of trophies. Refreshments available.

Our annual competition attracts models of all scales and prototype, representing novice modellers and master modellers alike. To enter just turnup on the night with a completed entry form. Enter as many sections as you wish with as many exhibits as you wish. All entries must be placed by 8pm.

Painting and Weathering Workshop March 2009.

This workshop will concentrate on rolling stock, representing the real used effect or wear and tear, and local climate coditions. A variety of techniques will be used to create that used look.

Please bring with you items of rolling stock, some basic painting tools and a picture or what you want to create.
